Rubber Gaskets
A Gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces to prevent any leakage when the two parts are compressed together. Gaskets are extremely useful in situations where the mating surfaces are not perfect and contain small irregularities which can be filled with the gaskets comparably soft material. A common material used for the manufacture of gaskets is rubber which is used in many applications on machinery, medical equipment, the automotive trade and high pressure situations such as pumps and hydraulics. Other materials used are nitrile rubber, metal, silicone, fibreglass, cork, felt and paper. They are manufactured for specific purposes and are made from a material that is to a degree yielding such that it is able to deform and tightly fill the space it is designed for, including any irregularities. There are a few gaskets however that require a sealant to be applied directly to the gasket to function properly.
