A
CNC milling machine is a machine tool which operates by computer numerical
control. CNC milling machines are used to shape components/objects out of solid
materials, and various types of metal. CNC milling machines have two basic
forms, the vertical CNC milling machine and the horizontal CNC milling machine,
and both of these machine tools are available for manual operation. Most CNC
milling machines are of the vertical type, and the computer controls the three
axis X axis Y axis and the Y axis. These CNC milling machines have a good range
of uses such as engraving applications and 2.5D surfaces such as relief
sculptures. The more advanced CNC milling machines have 5 axis, and horizontal
CNC milling machines also have a C or Q axis, allowing the work piece to be
rotated. However the use of a 5 axis CNC milling machine can produce extremely
complicated geometries and the programming is beyond most operators. 5 axis CNC
milling machines are normally always programmed with CAM.
