Private Water Supply

Carter Pumps Ltd News and PR from Carter Pumps Ltd - Published 06 April 2016 Delivering a reliable and cost effective private water supply is what we do.
We have been doing it since the company was formed in 1984.

Your private water supply has a number of possible sources

Well
Borehole
Spring
River or Stream
Lake or Pond
A step by step guide to how we can bring you your very own private water supplyÂ….

1. HYDROGEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
Before considering a new groundwater abstraction borehole we recommend a hydrogeological assessment is carried out. This will provide essential information to enable us to determine the practicality of the borehole project.

Each report, prepared by a professional hydrologist, is bespoke but can includeÂ…

Geology and Lithology of the ground beneath your site.
Hydro-geological properties from comparable boreholes in the vacinity
Calculated yield, seasonality of supply, impacts, etc
Water quality – drawing on our extensive database of water quality throughout the UK
Local regulatory conditions
Outline of potential flooding risk
2. DRILL BOREHOLE
Depending on geological strata, depth and required diameter of the proposed borehole a suitable drilling rig will be selected.

The following tasks will be undertakenÂ…

Local check for underground utilities such as gas, electricity and telecom
Drill borehole, typically Ø8” down to the water table which can be as deep as 200m
Dependent upon geology, install a temporary steel casing to prevent collapses during drilling
Insert a minimum Ø6 PVC water well casing and slotted screen to the bottom of the borehole.
Back fill the gap (annular space) between the slotted screen and borehole walls with washed and graded gravel
Cement or grout the gap between the pump chamber and borehole walls at the top of the borehole
Finish the well head with a chamber and cover
Experience, gained over 35 years of borehole drilling, tells us that skimping on the specification is most definitely a false economy. Consequently we will always recommendÂ…

High quality PVC water well casing and screen systems that are KIWA, DWi and WRAS approved.
Ø6” finished hole.
3. TEST PUMPING
Using one of our submersible borehole pumps and a dip tape a series of pumping tests will be carried out to determine

the rest water level
the yield
the recovery rate
This information allows us to correctly size the pumping equipment required.

4. TEST WATER QUALITY
We arrange for water samples to be sent to a UKAS accredited laboratory in order to carry out chemical and bacteriological analysis of the water. Whilst borehole water is generally of good quality it can sometimes contain dissolved minerals or impurities.

5. SYSTEM DESIGN AND INSTALLATION
Based on the results of 3 and 4 above we can now design a system to deliver a reliable, safe and potable water supply.

Pumping equipment will be sized to match the capabilities of the borehole.

From the water test results we will be able to supply and install any filtration or treatment systems that may be required to ensure compliance with regulations.
