Expansion Vessels and Legionella

The Health and Safety Executive has issued interesting guidance to help those responsible for hot or cold water systems with a view to reducing the risk of legionella and other micro -organisms.One specific area of concern to our customers is the expansion vessel (sometimes called a hydraulic accumulator) often fitted to a pump or booster set to reduce the number of pump starts. Traditionally, with fixed speed pumps, these vessels would fill and empty sufficiently between stop and start to such an extent that the risk of microbial growth was minimal.
However, with the development of ever more accurate control of pumps with inverter drives the discharge pressure now remains almost constant. This has resulted in decreased exchange of water within the expansion vessel and as a consequence an increased risk of legionella and other microbial growths.
