Roof Drainage
The main aim of a roof is to keep water out. The large area of a roof repels a lot of water which has to be directed by suitable means. The water that is repelled during a rainfall can be potentially harmful to the building that the roof is protecting. If it runs down the walls it can seep into the mortar or other means. If it lies around the base or foundations it can cause seepage into the interior and cause dry rot and rising damp. It is for this reason that buildings are designed to have some system in place to protect walls from most of the rainfall. Overhanging eaves are usually used for this purpose. Most modern roofs have a system of gutters, valleys, waterspouts and drainpipes to remove the water from the vicinity of the building. It is essential that a good drainage system is installed on any dwelling where rainfall is a common day occurrence. Even when the system is in place it should be checked periodically for leaks, blockage and to make sure all the fittings are still holding well. Downpipes need to be unblocked at the top entrance on a regular basis so as water can drain down. Leaking gutters can seep water into the seals and soffits below the eaves. Drainage of water is probably one of the most important systems to keep well maintained.
