Raised Floors
A Raised Floor System is a type of floor that can provide an elevated false structural floor above the existing solid substrate floor to create a concealed void for the installation of mechanical or electrical services. They are mainly used in modern office buildings and in the commercial environment. Raised flooring can be installed at varying heights, anything from 50mm to 1200mm to suit services that can be housed underneath. In some cases additional structural support and even lighting are provided to enable a person to crawl or even walk beneath. In the commercial environment underfloor air distribution is becoming increasingly popular by using the space (which is sometimes known as the plenum chamber) to distribute conditioned air, in Europe it has been commonplace since the 1970s. This type of floor is made up of a grid of metal framework of adjustable height supports that provide support for removable floor panels, these floor panels are normally 60cm x 60cm. The height of the legs are dictated by the amount of cabling or ducting which is to be installed beneath, but typically a gap of 15cm is used for clearance.
