Milling Machine
A Horizontal Milling Machine is an engineering piece of machinery found in the engineering industry and is used extensively in engineering and production workshops everywhere. The difference between a vertical milling machine and a horizontal milling machine is the spindle arrangement. On the vertical mill the spindle is vertically situated, with the cutting equipment rotating horizontally, but on the horizontal mill the spindle comes out of the machine horizontally. The cutters are mounted on the arbor, the table moves left to right which is the X axis and front to back which is the Y axis. These machines are capable of taking large cuts on the material because of the support given by the overarm which supports the end of the spindle which the cutters are mounted on. There are many types of cutters that can be used on these milling machines such as side and face, roller mills and various angle cutters, there are slitting cutters which can be used to create grooves or slots as well as being able to part off portions of material. The cutters may also be mounted in sets or groups of various sizes and forms, to produce intricate shapes and profiles, gear cutting being a good example.
