HSE Throws South Yorkshire Under The Microscope

During the week of Monday 10th January 2022, inspectors from the HSE visited 71 businesses within the Yorkshire and North East region due to a reported 12 deaths under RIDDOR regulations and 594 serious injuries between 2014 and 2021 resulting in an alarming increase of serious and fatal incidents.

The companies which have been visited were identified as a high-risk sector or as performing poorly. This includes businesses such as metal fabrication, engineering, general manufacturing, waste and recycling.

The findings showed that over 65% of these businesses had breached regulations in some form. 3 prohibition notices were served along with 31 improvement notices and 23 businesses were written too. Further to this, some of the examples breaches which the HSE uncovered included poor controls of welding fumes and metal working fluids.
