Dangers of Moving Vehicles

AW Safety Management Ltd News and PR from AW Safety Management Ltd - Published 13 January 2022 Worker Fatally Struck by Tele-handler
A farming partnership based in Somerset receives fine of £53,000 plus costs. This follows a tragic incident in October 2019.

Tele-handers are similar to forklifts, they move heavy loads. They can also be fitted with many attachments. Again these vehicles possess similar dangers and risks.

During the incident a self-employed worker was mucking out when he was struck by a reversing tele handler.

Following court proceeding the farm partnership in question pleaded guilty to breaching section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Across 2020/2021, a whopping 25 fatal workplace accidents involved moving vehicles.

The HSE responded following this investigation: "Being struck by a moving vehicle has been the biggest cause of workplace fatalities on farms for several years. Farmers should properly assess their workplace transport risks and separate people and vehicles where reasonably practicable."

In this scenario there was a lack of Safe Systems of Work in place.
