3 separate companies have been fined for severe hand injuries due to lack of safe working practices.

A UK based manufacturer, has been heavily fined after a workerÂ’s hand was trapped whilst polishing a metal shaft. The emery cloth that was being used got entangled in the machine and resulted in their hand being severed.

A Sawmill in Cornwall has also been fined after a worker had their finger severed whilst assessing why a saw was cutting incorrectly. His glove became entangled in the moving parts resulting in the injury.

Finally, a food manufacturing company received a fine after a workerÂ’s index finger was severed which cleaning the door mechanism on a mixer.

As a result of these incidences they have paid a combined fine of £663,000 and costs of almost £21,000.

In 2020/2021, according to RIDDOR Reports, a total of 51,211 Employee non-fatal injuries were reported by employers. 4% of these injuries were attributed to contact with moving machinery, and in fact 14 on which were fatal.
