Case Study - Nakheel Mall

SE Controls News and PR from SE Controls - Published 22 March 2021 SE Controls helps protect visitors at Dubai's Palm Jumeirah Nakheel Mall.
Nakheel Mall, Dubai's 435,000 sq.metre retail and lifestyle centre located in the unique Palm Jumeirah development, is using control solutions and 192 actuators from SE Controls as part of the fire safety and smoke control system at the new complex.

Designed by international architect practice, RSP, for Palm Jumeirah's master developers, Nakheel, the new mall has more than 200 shops, restaurants and entertainment options, as well as a 15 screen cinema complex and a direct link to the new 52 storey Palm Tower residential development.

A key feature of the mall's design is its 'crystal dome', a 25 metre high a hemi-spherical glass clad structure, which is bisected by a monorail station and is an essential part of the retail centreÂ’s fire safety and smoke control system.

SE Controls became involved with Nakheel Mall, partly as a result of its success with another major retail development in Dubai, Dragon Mart 2, where 1100 actuators and control solutions were used to open skylight & vertical façade panels for smoke ventilation.

For Nakheel Mall, SE Controls, supplied, tested and commissioned 192 Twin Chain actuators and 48 SHEVTEC 8A controllers, which are used to automatically open the crystal domeÂ’s integral glazed smoke vents, on both sides of the structure, in the event of a fire.

In normal operation the glazed smoke vents remain closed until triggered by a signal from the Nakheel Mall's fire detection system, which are then automatically open the 192 Twin Chain actuators. This allows smoke to be vented from the building and enables escape routes to be kept clear for visitors and staff to leave safely.

The actuators are 24 Volt DC units and are tested to EN12101-2, while the SHEVTEC controllers (tested to EN 12101-10) also incorporate a battery backup to maintain operation in the event of a mains power failure.

Director of SE Controls Middle East, Madhava Prasad, commented: "We have a tremendous amount of experience and expertise in providing smoke control solutions in a wide range of projects and sectors across the globe."

He added: "We use these abilities to support designers, fire consultants and engineers in the Middle East and ensure the systems are effective and we are delighted to have been selected for this prestigious project."
