WHAT IS METROLOGY

Midland Metrology Ltd News and PR from Midland Metrology Ltd - Published 08 May 2015 I have lost count at the number of times over the last 25 years that I have been asked...
“What is Metrology? Something to do with the weather?”

No, that is Meteorolgy! Metrology is Precision Measurement.

Then nearly always we are asked 'Who needs to measure, and what do they measure?'

The very simple answer to that is,anybody or company that makes anything needs to measure the finished or part finished items.

Why? To ensure that they fit,or weigh,or conform to the designers specifications.
The Industrial Revolution brought along for the first time, mass production.
Imagine two blacksmiths, one in Telford ( the birthplace of the industrial Revolution) and one forty miles away in say, Coventry. Both men making a shaft to fit into a bush ( hole), perhaps the spindle assembly of cart wheels. Now, blacksmiths would produce very good finished products but you could almost guarantee that the Telford shaft would not fit the Coventry bush. It became obvious that the only way to achieve full interchangeability, was for both men to use the same method of measuring.

Today a shaft made in the UK can be made to such high degree of accuracy, that it can fit a bush made anywhere In the world. Since the birth of industry, manufacturing is now undertaken in almost every country in the world. Try to imagine the chaos without measurement and limits and fits.

During the last 250 years machining techniques have developed to an unbelievable degree of technology. Measuring tools, machines and techniques have grown in parallel to keep pace.

That is exactly why we have the need to measure
What do we measure? Everything!
It may be just for size, so that components fit the mating part.

It may be weight, especially in the food industry, when a pound of potatoes means
16 ounces, not 15 or 17. In this case it is to comply with fair trading. The weight factor could be to do with lift off on Airplanes. If each component weighed 10 % more than it should, disaster would probably occur.

Who are Midland MetrologyÂ’s customers? As I just stated, everyone who manufactures!
