Cranage, where we use a wide range of technical standards for
testing and evaluating the performance and safety of electrical and
electronic equipment throughout Europe, North America and around the
world. Many countries accept harmonised standards, ie. those
prefixed with EN or IEC, whilst North America recognises FCC, UL and
NFPA standards. We are accredited and recognised by:
...• United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS)
...• United Kingdom Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS)
...• United Kingdom BIS consultant for machinery
...• Notified Body (BIS appointed) for 2006/95/EC (LVD)
...• U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Cranage provides specialised laboratory and field evaluation
services to help you obtain product approvals for North America,
Canada, Mexico and Australia as well as Continental Europe.
Testing in the UK
There are many Test Houses across
the UK with excellent facilities, but partnering with Cranage is
about much more than testing. A host of technical services not
offered by others are available, some of which can be embedded
during product development and applied in advance of testing to help
resolve issues that would otherwise prevent or delay certification.
Despite our hands-on approach, it does not affect our independence
and impartiality towards accredited testing.
Test Houses are fully equipped laboratories with specialist
facilities and expertise to evaluate products within their declared
We have many Laboratories for
various different tests:
If for some
reason, however, your particular products cannot be transported
to the UK or are unable to be assessed in a laboratory, we will
mobilise our facilities to perform the tests on your premises
and use our knowledge and experience to obtain viable results.
The US market for
electrical and electronic products is conditioned to accepting
product approval marks and safety certification from a Nationally
Recognised Testing Laboratory (NRTL). These laboratories are also
recognised by OSHA*, a body which sets and enforces protective
workplace safety and health standards.
(* Occupational Safety and Health Administration)
CRANAGE has many
years of experience working with NRTL’s and in partnership with QPS
Evaluation Services Inc. has become an Authorised Testing Facility
in the UK for product approvals and certification in N. America and
Cranage also provides factory inspections, quality audits, training
and advice for implementing a quality management system for the
whole product approvals process.
Products tested by Cranage and certified for use in N. America
include scientific instruments, professional audio equipment, vacuum
cleaners, commercial laundry equipment, bottle labelling machines,
electric hair straighteners and medical equipment.
Standards for Manufacturing
with regulations under the CE Low Voltage Directive and CE EMC
Directive is mandatory for all lighting equipment with a primary
function of generating or distributing light.
Lighting standards are used to check that a product is safe, and
causes no danger to persons or property.
Tests for luminaire and control gear safety are generally specified
in EN60598-1 and EN61347-1 respectively but depending on the type of
luminaire design, additional parts such as EN60598-2-3 for Street
Lighting or EN60598-2-5 for Floodlights, etc., may take precedence.
Subject to design, all appropriate sections of applicable standards
should be applied.
Human exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) is assessed according
to EN62493 which applies to all lighting equipment containing
electronic control gear. Compliance with this EMF standard for
lighting is mandatory in Europe and requires measurements to be
taken of induced current density due to electric fields in the
frequency range 20kHz to 10MHz.
Testing to the radio disturbance standard EN55015 is also required
for EMF compliance while EMC additionally specifies EN61547 for
Lighting standards for LED lamps and modules used for assessing
performance and safety in Europe are EN62384, EN62031, EN62560, and

Carrie Spiers, Spiers Engineering Safety
At Spiers Engineering Safety we help our clients through the appropriate conformity assessment procedures in order that their machinery complies with the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC). Where this machinery contains electrical or electronic parts that may generate or be affected by electromagnetic disturbance the EMC directive (2014/30/EU) also applies.
The experience, knowledge and testing carried out Cranage EMC testing Ltd. to harmonised EN standards has proved invaluable to our clients.
As academics exploring the transfer of a prototype to a product, for a large multinational, for the first time, we were rather anxious as to the whole CE marking process. Mark and his team at Cranage, gently and skilfully guided us through the whole pre-compliance process, providing insightful and instructive solutions to any issues raised. I would certainly recommend that others consider using Cranage and their state-of-the art facility.
Jim Murrin CEO, 4Links Limited
I wish to express my genuine thanks for the way you and your team managed our recent product safety testing. In particular I was impressed by the team’s professionalism and with the high level of support and practical advice we received. Cranage EMC Testing will continue to be 4Links’ test house of choice.
Penny Ecroyd, Prism UK Medical Ltd
During the course of testing you identified a ‘spike’ which did not affect statutory compliance. With your advice, in conjunction with our electronics people, we modified the circuit board to eliminate this spike. The reliability of the circuit board was dramatically improved as a result and we believe was a significant contributor to the general exceptional reliability of our product. This reliability has had as you may imagine a direct effect on sales.
We have commented on several occasions that, unlike the taxman, you have given us added value and a return on our investment’.
Stephen Clemmet, Integration Technology Ltd
‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and Cranage for your expertise over the last two years. Without doubt, as a result of your knowledge, our product designs have advanced significantly. Aside, our customer who has requested TUVus was in our office on Monday of this week. They saw the unit and expressed how pleased they were with Cranage’s work to complete the approvals process.
Before working with Cranage, I investigated several test houses. You may be assured that Cranage is offering a first rate service and I would be pleased to be able to recommend Cranage to others’.
