RD Castings Ltd (High Pressure Die Casting)
RD Castings based in Mildenhall,
Suffolk are a leading UK Zinc and Aluminium Die Casting company.
Founded in 1976 we are a privately owned family business dedicated to producing
superior quality Aluminium and Zinc components.
We have one of the most advanced manufacturing facilities that houses the most
technologically advanced range of high pressure die-casting machines in the UK. Our workforce
are highly skilled and always receive the latest training and technology to stay
ahead of the competition.
RD Castings are passionate about both our customers and our products, we strive
to offer the very best customer service and exceptional products. With over 40

Aluminium High Pressure Die Casting |
With over 40 years' experience in the field, aluminium die casting is an area in
which we are highly renowned and RD Castings main activity.
Our foundry caters for both large and small batch sizes in a range of metals. RD
Castings have a variety of HPDC (High Pressure Die Casting) machines with locking forces between 160 and 450
tonnes. To further improve the casting quality all of our machines are fitted
with integral / remote facilities to vacuum cast, this dramatically reduces
porosity.
We have recently acquired a French 450 tonne machine allowing us to produce
castings of up to 2kg shot weight. RD Castings are also extremely competitive
when it comes to larger batch sizes where our fully robotic machines come in to
their own, and with smaller batch sizes, we have machines with incorporated
manual ladling to reduce set up times on small batch sizes of castings down to
just a few hundred.
Aluminium High Pressure Die Casting Advantages:
- Parts are produced with dimensional stability and accuracy.
- Aluminium HPDC parts are heat resistant and stronger than plastic injection
moulded parts.
- It produces thin wall castings that are lighter and stronger than what other
casting methods can produce.
- Parts are easily finished or plated thanks to the smooth or textured surface
that is produced.
High pressure aluminium die castings are highly recyclable and have many
environmental benefits, including:
Reduced energy consumption
Recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy required to produce it from raw
materials.
Reduced pollution
Recycling aluminium reduces the pollution associated with mining, and recycling
one ton of aluminium saves nine tons of CO2 emissions.
Reduced dependency on other countries
Recycling aluminium reduces the need to import aluminium from other countries,
such as China, which produces over 55% of the world's primary aluminium.
Reduced shipping emissions
Aluminium is lightweight, so it's easier for vehicles to carry, which reduces
fuel consumption and shipping emissions.
Circular economy
Aluminium can be recycled multiple times without losing many of its original
properties, making it a key material for a circular economy.
Infinite recyclability
Products made from recycled aluminium can be recycled again and again. Aluminium
die castings are also used in many industries, including automotive,
construction, small appliances, and more
Zinc High Pressure Die Casting |
Our Zinc HPDC machines vary from 75 - 120 tonnes. We
employ the latest technology including fully integrated casting weighing, auto
spraying, light guard presses and conveyor cooling. We monitor the complete
cycle in real time to ensure quality castings consistently time after time.
Zinc based alloys have a range of special properties that allow for very close
tolerances to be cast, this effectively eliminates the need for second operation
machining.
When comparing zinc HPDC castings to aluminium HPDC castings, zinc castings have
an extended die life due to zinc alloys less aggressive wear characteristics. In
fact zinc HPDC tools often see half a million shots before replacement or
refurbishment tooling is required. These features mean that for most designers,
zinc castings will remain the casting method of choice.
Gravity Die Casting |
For small batch work and prototypes we have a special small gravity die casting
facility. This method is not suitable for mass production but ideal for small
batch work, one-offs and prototypes. We operate several high efficiency electric
resistance Morgan furnaces and cover everything from the initial design right
through to the finished product.
Gravity die casting is often preferred over sand casting as the cast iron moulds
allow for zinc and aluminium castings to be produced more cheaply and
accurately. The tooling cost of gravity die castings compared to high pressure
die castings is also a fraction of the cost.
Non-turbulent filling ensures heat treatable gravity castings are produced with
minimal porosity and the rapid chilling provides excellent mechanical
properties.
Finishing |
RD Castings can apply an external surface finish to castings if they require a
protective or decorative outer coating.
