Narrow fabrics otherwise known as riband or
ribbon, is a flexible thin strip of material, usually cloth but can also be some
type of plastic or even metal, which are generally used for binding or tying, ie:
to
wrap a parcel or gift. Narrow fabrics made from textiles, most often silk are
used in connection with garments and dress but are put to use for other
applications such as ornamental purposes and even symbolic purposes. Narrow
fabrics are used around the world to decorate the body the hair and even
animals. Celebratory usage can also be seen on buildings, cars and medals.
Ribbon weaving was thought to have begun as far back as the 11th century. In
England the prime seat of ribbon making is in Coventry. The biggest importer of
narrow fabrics is the North American continent who import products such as
rosettes, bows and garment accessories made from ribbon.
