Dies
A “die” is used to cut threads on a known sized cylindrical bar, which creates a threaded piece which functions like a bolt or screw. Typical types of dies used are the split dies with a top adjusting screw, one piece dies with top adjusting screw, one piece dies with side adjusting screw and dies with side adjusting screws. A cylindrical or turned blank which is slightly smaller than the required diameter is first machined with a slight taper or chamfer, this chamfer allows the die to ease itself onto the blank before it cuts a sufficient length to pull itself along. The adjusting screws allow the die to be reduced or increased to accommodate slight variations in size, due to material, manufacture, or just die sharpness. The screws located in the die holder are used to adjust the diameter of the thread; however, care should be taken not to over tighten these screws which can shatter the die due to its hard brittle properties. This adjustment can be controlled to minute amounts, giving the operator complete control of accurately sizing the thread.
