A coaxial cable or coax consists of an inner
conductor which is surrounded by a tubular insulating
material,
with a high dielectric constant made from a flexible material. These are then
surrounded by a conductive layer of fine woven wire or thin metallic foil and
finally encased within a thin insulating layer on the outside. Coaxial cables
are used as transmission lines for radio frequency signals such as connecting
receivers to radio transmitters, and distributing cable television signals.
Coaxial cables should not be confused with other types of shielded cables which
transmit lower frequency signals, because such cables are not constructed to the
precise specifications need to transmit radio frequencies.
