How to buy a second hand shipping container

Billie Box Ltd News and PR from Billie Box Ltd - Published 04 September 2013 There is no such thing as a 'Cheap' container. You get what you pay for....
There are a number of dealers out there that want to offer a “cheap” container. Well we believe “You get what you pay for”. Buying “Cheap” is not always the best way forward.

The second hand containers we sell are generally approx. 12 years old, they are watertight and structurally sound. Remember, they will have been used for shipping goods all around the world via sea and road. During their life; they will have been handled many times, lifted on and off ships and trucks, full and empty. After about 12 years or so (time varies depending on the shipping companies sale policy), these containers will be ideal for static storage.
Before buying your storage container, we recommend you check for the following with the dealer:
They are Watertight and structurally sound
A lock box (cowl) would need to be fitted – for extra security
The doors should be easy to open and shut
The door locking bar handles are working easily
The wooden floors are fairly intact
Cosmetics, you will have surface rust, scratches, scuffs and dents which should still be in cube.
The above criteria will ensure (with a little maintenance-we offer a checklist) that your storage container will last another 10-15 years.
There are suppliers that are offering containers that are over 20 years old, this we feel is FALSE Economy. These containers will not last as long. You may have troubles with many elements whilst being used for storage. The longer a container is used for shipping the more it will deteriorate and cause you problems.
We strongly recommend you get more information before you buy.

Remember - You get what you pay for, says Jane Billing
