A pioneering organic food manufacturer has chosen Innovia Films’ compostable NatureFlex™ to wrap its latest range of products.

Lima Foods, part of the brand portfolio of the international Hain Celestial Group, represents innovative quality products aiming for the well-being of all. Based in Belgium and founded in 1957, it was the first company in Europe to introduce rice cakes to the market.

Outlining why they chose NatureFlex™, Mrs Chantal Uytenhoven, Procurement Manager, of Lima Foods enthused: “We are a market leader in the field of organic nutrition and needed a leading packaging film that gave our rice products shelf appeal and fitted in with our sustainable ethos. NatureFlex™ was the perfect solution.”

Be_NaturaL is the consulting company that recommended Innovia Film’s NatureFlex™. Founder and Managing Director of Be_NaturaL, Dirk Wens, clarified: “Lima Foods were looking to switch their packaging towards being more environmentally friendly and at the same time offering conventional benefits. NatureFlex™ was the obvious choice as it is a compostable barrier film, offering a long shelf life for dried foods such as rice and is made from renewable resources (wood pulp).”

The new rice packs are available via specialist retail outlets. The transparent NatureFlex™ film was printed with OK Compost certified inks, tested on migration according to 1935/2004 and 10/2011.

Jan van Heule, Innovia Films’ Sales & Marketing Manager, Benelux, explained: “We are delighted that our compostable NatureFlex™ film is helping Lima Foods to meet their objectives to move towards using packaging from renewable resources.”

NatureFlex™ films are certified to meet the American ASTM D6400, European EN13432 and Australian AS4736 standards for compostable packaging. The wood-pulp is sourced from managed plantations. The renewable biobased content of NatureFlex™ films is typically 95% by weight of material according to ASTM D6866.

Offering advantages for packing and converting, NatureFlex™ films have inherent deadfold and anti-static properties, high gloss and resistance to grease and oil, good barrier to gases, aromas and mineral oils and a wide heat-seal range.

NatureFlex™ begins life as a natural product – wood - and breaks down at the end of its lifecycle in a home compost bin (or industrial compost environment) within a matter of weeks. It is also confirmed as suitable for emerging 'waste to energy' techniques such as anaerobic digestion.
