SPECIAL OVERHEAD CRANE PROJECT

Businessmagnet.co.uk News and PR from Businessmagnet.co.uk - Published 26 October 2016 Linian Crane and Hoist Company were approached by Knowsley Engineering Services Ltd...
Linian Crane and Hoist Company were approached by Knowsley Engineering Services Ltd of Skelmersdale in Lancashire and asked to design a bespoke lifting system for a sizable metal treatment facility that Knowsley Engineering were manufacturing for a client of theirs.

The treatment facilty comprised of a number of dipping tanks in a line 30 metres long. The crane system would need to lift a large cage containing production items from the floor to a height that just cleared the tanks and it would them travel along the line of tanks lowering the cage into any particular tank and releasing it. The crane would also of course have to recover and relocate the cage after treatment.

There were various constraints involved and Knowsley Engineering were particularly concerned that the system should make maximum use of the very limited headroom and the tight space available around the treatment tanks. As this was a fast moving production facility the system would have to be totally reliable and also operator friendly in terms of both ease of use and safety.

Linian Cranes met with Knowsley Engineering several times both in the office and on site over a period of time and together they thrashed out a design and specification which totally met with the clientÂ’s requirements despite all of the constraints.

It was decided that a completely free standing gantry system be installed and that two cranes would be supplied each to carry a load of up to 5 tonnes.

Headroom was very tight so special twin hoist double girder cranes were designed with each crane having the twin electric chain hoists mounted in fixed positions and suspended from brackets above the double girders.

Purpose made lifting frames were designed to be suspended from the hoists and to easily locate on the lifting lugs of the cages manufactured by Knowsley Engineering.

It was also decided that the system should be radio remote controlled with pendant plug-in backup and that two hand sets would be provided. Each hand set has a change over switch so that the hoists can be operated in tandem or independantly and this enables the operator to keep the hoist hook heights syncronised.

The controls feature ‘monitored tandem lift’ as an additional safety feature in accordance with the very latest standards. If one hoist fails to operate when in tandem mode this feature prevents the other hoist from working.

The complete system was installed, tested and commissioned by Linian Cranes within just a few weeks of an order being placed.

Ian Watson, Managing Director of Linian Crane and Hoist Company, said “This is yet another great example of Linian’s ability to tailor bespoke lifting solutions to customer’s individual and specific requirements”.

Paul Davies, Managing Director of Knowsley Engineering Services Ltd, commented “ A very impressive performance from Ian and the team at Linian Cranes, we are delighted with the end result “.
