Embryologists at a global research laboratory found that standard labels used on their freezing straws failed at various stages, and chose CILS-91000ULT/SL labels as a durable alternative.

In particular, the adhesive on labels purchased “off the shelf” was breaking down when submerged in alcohol cooling baths, prior to LN storage. This was causing the labels to lose form; either partially unravelling or falling off the plastic freezing straws entirely – creating extra work, and risking the loss of data.

The laboratory chose CILS-91000ULT/SL labels, as they resist long-term storage in conventional freezers and liquid nitrogen vapour (down to -196°C), as well as the permanent solvent acrylic adhesive retaining adhesion when exposed to LN, alcohol baths or solvents. The labels are specifically constructed for cylindrical vessels such as tubes and straws; featuring a clear wraparound tail for complete print protection and permanent adhesion.

Laboratory staff opted for the CILS-91000ULT/SL labels in several colours to aid immediate sample identification, and chose to have labels delivered blank for in-house laser printing on demand (a thermal transfer version of the label is available). In this instance labels were sized to precisely fit the study data (patient name, dates, barcode etc.) around the laboratoryÂ’s 0.25ml straws, but CILS-91000ULT/SL labels can be manufactured for vessels of any diameter.
