If you are in charge of commercial premises you are legally obligated to carry out a detailed fire risk assessment to identify any dangers or hazards on site. The risk assessment is essential in keeping your staff and visitorsÂ’ safe as well as the property and must be carried out by an expert with relevant fire safety knowledge and experience.

For fire to occur there must be a source of ignition, fuel and oxygen. If all three are present and in close proximity of each other, then the fire risk increases. It is scenarios like this that the assessment identifies. All potential sources of ignition and fuels that are present in your premises need to be noted. Possible sources of ignition include things like naked flames, hot surfaces such as heaters and lighting, any object or machinery that may cause friction and sparks from electric appliances.

Anything that burns are hypothetical sources of fuel and often in business stock rooms these can be items made from paper or wood. Some liquids are also flammable and should be considered in the fire risk assessment such as solvents, paints and petrol.

Along with the potential causes of fire you must consider factors that could put your staff and premises at risk. How quickly fire could spread on site, how many people there are in the area to contemplate if fire were to break out, take in to account the arrangements needed to give warning in the event of a fire and for both staff and visitors alike to exit the building.

Meritas are the experts when it comes to installing your fire safety solutions. We can assess your individual site and situation in order to provide the most effective and comprehensive fire safety system.
