Tissue Paper is an extremely lightweight paper which can be made from virgin and recycled paper pulp. It has strength, lightweight, absorbency, brightness, stretch, appearance and comfort. It is produced on a paper machine that has a single large steam heated drying cylinder fitted with a hot air hood. The cylinder is sprayed with adhesives to make the paper stick. Then creping is carried out by the cylinders doctor blade by scraping the paper from the cylinders surface. The creping is controlled by the strength of the adhesive, geometry of the doctor blade, speed difference between the cylinder and final section of the paper machine and the pulps characteristics. The highest water absorbing tissues are produced with a through air drying process. These papers contain high amounts of other components which give a bulky paper with high wet tensile strength and excellent water holding capabilities. The through air drying process uses about twice the energy compared to conventional drying processes of paper. There are various types of paper tissue produced including, facial tissue which is very soft. Paper towels, which is a major application. Wrapping tissue, which is a decorative tissue. Toilet tissue, which has been in use since the 19th century. Table napkins are also widely produced and can be manufactured in one to four ply thick.
