Refrigerated Container
A Refrigerated Container is an intermodal container used in intermodal transport that is refrigerated for the transportation of cold and frozen items such as food. The refrigerated container will have its own integral refrigeration unit, but they rely on external power from the electrical power points at a land based site, a container ship or in the case of shipping on the quay. When they are being transported on the road on the back of a trailer they can be powered by a diesel generator which can be attached to the container. Some of these containers are also equipped with a water cooling system which can be used when the container is stored below deck on a ship which has little or no ventilation to remove heat that is generated. However the use of water cooling systems is declining due to large running costs. The impact of refrigerated containers is enormous, allowing consumers worldwide to enjoy fresh food at any time of the year, previously unavailable for many countries.
