Office automation usually refers to the many
types of software and computer machinery, which is used to collect, manipulate,
store, digitally create and relay any office information which is needed for
achieving basic tasks and goals. Office automation helps optimize or automate
existing office procedures. The basic activities of an office automation system
are, electronic transfer, raw data storage and the management of electronic
business information. A LAN is the backbone of any office automation and this
allows transfer of data, mail and voice messages across the network. All office
tasks/functions fall in to the category of office automation and include,
telephone switchboard operations, copying, fax, records management, dictation,
filing and microfilm records.
