Lithium-ion batteries also known as Li-ion
batteries are a rechargeable type of battery. With lithium-ion batteries, the
lithium ion moves between the anode and th
e
cathode. The lithium ion moves from the anode to the cathode whilst it is
discharging and when charging it moves in reverse, from the cathode to the
anode. Lithium-ion batteries are very often used in consumer electronics, and
are one of the more popular types of battery for portable electronics.
Lithium-ion batteries have one of the best energy-to-weight ratios, a slow loss
of charge and no memory effects, and in addition to consumer uses, lithium-ion
batteries are also becoming more popular for, defence, aerospace and automotive
applications, because of their high density. However some kinds of mishandling
may cause lithium-ion batteries to explode. Uses for lithium-ion batteries can
include children’s toys, laptops, camcorders, mobile phones and some battery
powered vehicles.
