Hydraulic Ram Pumps
A Hydraulic Ram pump is a cyclic water pump powered by hydropower which functions as a hydraulic transformer. It takes in water at one hydraulic head and flow rate and outputs water at a higher hydraulic head and lower flow rate. It uses the water hammer effect to produce pressure that allows a portion of the input water that powers the pump to be lifted to a point higher than where the water originally started. They are sometimes used in remote places where there is a source of low head hydropower and a requirement to pump water to a higher level than the original source. In this case a ram could be used because it requires no outside source of power other than the kinetic energy of water. A Basic hydraulic ram pump has only two moving parts, the spring loaded waste valve and the delivery check valve which makes it easy to build, easy to maintain and extremely reliable.
