Ground Source Heat Pumps Uk
A Ground Source Heat Pump is a pump is a heating or cooling system that pumps heat to or from the ground. It utilises the heat stored in the earth which has come from the sun and not from the earth’s core which makes it a form of solar power. It takes advantage of the moderate temperatures in the ground to increase efficiency and reduce running costs of heating and cooling systems. They can however be incorporated with solar heating to provide even greater efficiency and in this instance would be known as a geosolar system. Heat pumps are much more efficient at heating than a conventional pure electric heater even when extracting heat from cold winter air, although their efficiency tends to drop as the outside air falls below 5 degrees centigrade. A ground source heat pump system is capable of extracting heat in the winter and can transfer heat back into the ground during summer to create a cooling effect. Some ground source heat pump systems are capable of both heating and cooling but others are used solely for either heating or cooling.
