Fibreboard is a type of engineered wood product made from wood fibres. Different kinds of fibreboard include hardboard, medium density fibreboard (MDF) and particle board. The term fibreboard is sometimes used to describe particle board, but particle board comes under the heading of low density fibre board. Contrary to belief plywood is not fibreboard; it is instead made from thin sheets of wood bonded together. Fibreboard, particularly medium density board is used extensively in the furniture industry as it has a relatively good smooth finish and can be formed and shaped into almost any free form shape. This material is also used extensively in the car industry to create complicated shapes as are found on dashboards and door linings, which can be covered with such materials as cloth fabric, leather and suede. The use of fibreboard has now become common in the building sector and has such uses as sound proofing, roofing and structural sheathing.
