Ecology refers to the scientific study of the
distribution and abundance of organisms and their interactions with their
environment. In ecology studies will include mortality, bioenergetics,
reproductive behaviour and migrations. Because of its huge scope, ecology is
related to many other disciplines. Ecology is a highly applied science for
instance, natural resource management like fisheries, wildlife management,
forestry and habitat conservation are directly related to ecological sciences
and many problems in public health, agriculture and urban development are
informed by ecological considerations. The term ecology is often used as a
synonym for the environment or environmentalism.
