ComputerTutor was started by Nigel Goodwin early in 2007 with a view to providing Internet and Windows computer-based tuition to businesses and individual home users in Oxfordshire. Whilst travelling in India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand in 2006 I had found an immense demand for my technical skills, particularly when combined with good people skills. Frustrated Windows users were everywhere. If I stayed in one place for too long my travelling holiday soon became more like work.

I discovered common trends. More than half of problems stemmed from insufficient Internet protection and exposure to malware. Another problem was poor Windows maintenance arising from an oversight of important housekeeping tasks. The single most important trend that led me to start a business was the sheer volume of people I met who received inaccurate “expert” advice and poor, unreliable service. There are too many experts who think they know best, too many dishonest traders and far too much technophobia fuelled by modern crimes like phishing, online spying and behavioural trends analysis.

Two years on and the situation seems worse. People spend more money than necessary on computers – whether a business IT Technical Support department or a home computer budget.
