Although comparatively recently introduced to Europe, and even more recently Britain, what has become known as 'Patio Heating' began in California forty years ago. At first, the few European commercial users had to use American heaters, but by the early nineties the market had become big enough for local manufacturers to take an interest, and the British company SIERRA SPACE HEATING LTD established itself as leader from the outset, a position it retains today. What set Sierra apart was that it was already making a similar product for factory heating and used in chicken-rearing: they therefore started with a well tested basis rather than beginning from scratch, or more often simply trying to copy American models, as these early competitors were obliged to.
