A Fly-Cutter is made up of a body into which a toolbit is inserted. As the cutter rotates, the tool bit takes broad shallow cuts. Flycutters are mainly used for face milling to achieve a good wide finish. The toolbits are replaceable and on certain flycutters can be reground back to their original state. Most flycutters have a cylindrical body that holds one toolbit. It is usually standard practice to use a left hand turning toolbit held at an angle of 30-60 degrees. Flycutters with two toolbits generally have no name, but are sometimes referred to as double fly cutters. Fly cutters are sold in all machinist tool brochures, their diameters are the main difference when purchasing, these tend to have a sweep of up to 100mm. Because of this large swinging motion these cutters tend to be dangerous when rotating, fingers, rags and other relevant articles need to be removed from the nearby area, the cutter should also be guarded as should all cutting tools.
