Waxed
paper or wax paper is a specific type of paper, which has been coated with wax
on both sides. For this reason, waxed paper coated in this way has a translucent
appearance. Waxed paper has certain qualities and is resistant to some fluids.
Because of these qualities, waxed paper is used for wrapping food, because
water, oil and grease cannot pass through it. Waxed paper is commonly used to
line food containers, as many types of food will not stick to it in the same way
normal paper would. Dry foods of all different kinds used to be stored in waxed
paper because of its resistance to moisture, but today waxed paper has been
largely replaced by plastic wrap for most applications.
