Lightweight tents fall into the category of recreational camping. Lightweight tents are very often carried by backpackers, and are the smallest and lightest type. Lightweight tents may be sufficiently light enough to be carried for long distances on a boat, touring bicycle or even persons back. Lightweight tents of the backpacking type can vary in size from a very small one person bivouac, to a larger four person tent. First used as portable homes by nomadic peoples, tents are now more often used for recreational purposes, and even temporary shelters. Lightweight tents are available in all different colours, shapes and sizes, but their purpose remains the same, this being a lightweight portable and easily constructed place of temporary accommodation.
