A FaceMill is a milling cutter that consists of a cutter body which can be of various sizes, which is designed to hold multiple disposable carbide or ceramic cutting tips or inserts, often golden in colour. Theses tips are not designed to be resharpened, once they become blunt they are either turn around (if they are multi sided tips) or discarded. These tips are chosen carefully so as to achieve the cutting performance and finish required, the range of tips is almost endless, each having its own particular cutting properties for different materials. The choice of tip is also governed by the cutting action and accuracy required for a particular component. If the tips are multi sided, when blunt they can be taken out and indexed or rotated to present a fresh sharp face to the workpiece, this increases the life of the tip greatly, some tips having up to six available sides, thus, producing an economical cutting life.
