Blister Packing
Blister packaging is a word used to describe different types of preformed packing or packaging used to contain relatively small consumer goods. Perhaps the most widely known use of blister packaging is in the pharmaceutical industry to contain tablets or capsules giving the product a longer shelf life and also to protect the contents from contamination. On these blister packs there are a number of blisters made from a plastic type material which is then fixed to a backing of thin material sometimes metal based foil so as the consumer can push through to break open the blister to allow the contents to drop out, these are called push through packs. The other advantage of the blister pack is to allow for safe dosing to a certain amount of tablets or capsules contained within. Blister packs have many other uses, like to contain toys, pens batteries and other types of merchandise where the product can be examined before purchase. These kind of packs have to be manufactured to a strong specification to allow the packs to hang on shelves, but also weak enough to be opened by the consumer. The outer layer of plastic is heat sealed to the cardboard base. Sometimes a more secure form of packaging is required when the contents are more valuable like consumer electronics, so they have to be double sealed at the edge to prevent tampering, this type is called clamshell packaging.
