Protective footwear is an important aspect of safety in the
workplace, safety footwear is required to protect from sharp
objects, rolling or falling objects, wet or slippery surfaces, hot
surfaces or molten metals, or electrical hazards. When you are
expected to wear safety footwear for long periods during the day you
want it to be comfortable, meet the relevant safety standards, and
also look reasonable.
There are different toecap materials available, for example steel,
aluminum and non-metallic toecaps. All protective and safety
footwear, regardless of style, should have toe-caps conforming to
ISO EN 20345 (200 Joules). This means the toe-cap will withstand the
impact of 20kg in weight falling from a height of 10.2 metres. The
protection standard in protective footwear also relates to
compression corresponding to approximately 1.5 tonnes resting on the
toe area.
There are 3 basic types of footwear, safety boots, safety shoes and
safety trainers, since all toecaps meet the same standards, the
choice of footwear comes down to the particular environment in which
it is being used. Below is a summary of each section with the main
brands and most popular products. |
