|
Portable appliance testing, commonly referred to as PAT Testing is a routine
service whereby all movable appliances will be checked and tested, in accordance
with the Electricity at Work Act 1990 and the Health and safety at Work Act
1974.
Fire Alarm and Fire risk assessment
Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 (As Amended 1999) require any
business with 5 or more employees to carry out a written Risk Assessment and
have an Emergency plan.
Failure to undertake and hold a written Risk assessment is a Criminal Offence.
Additionally
to workplaces, other premises may also be subject to other Regulations that
place further special requirements particularly if the general Public may be at
Risk. Examples of these are Hotels, places used for the purpose of Public
Entertainment’s, licensed premises & restaurants.
Whether a Fire Alarm System has been previously installed or your premises does
not have a Fire Alarm or any procedure, it is a requirement by law that the Risk
assessment is undertaken.
Regular reviews of your Risk assessment will be required to ensure any changes

failure and that all lighting and exit signs are up to date with the current
legislation and are adequate for the purpose intended!
The testing requirements in the code of practice are:
• Function test: All emergency luminaries should be tested be breaking the

correctly. This test must be performed at least once per month and the results
logged

Fire
Extinguisher Servicing & Maintenance |
| |
All employers who are responsible for a particular work place must have their
equipment serviced in line with the standards and regulations. The provisions of
the fire precautions (Workplace) Regulations [1] Regulation 6 require that
“where it is necessary to provide extinguishing equipment to safeguard employees
in the event of the fire, this equipment shall be maintained in an efficient
state, in efficient working order and in good repair.”
Current
fire regulations under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 state that
all fire safety equipment must be "maintained in an efficient state, in
efficient working order and in good repair."
Fire extinguisher maintenance includes checking for exhausted extinguishers that
may not have been reported as used, checking that anti-tamper tags are in place,
and that the fire extinguishers themselves are physically in good condition and
ready for use – you’d be amazed how many safety pins get bent and stuck in place
without being spotted!
The British Standard 5306 part 3 requires that maintenance of all your fire
extinguishers is conducted by a 'competent person'.
The testing requirements in the code of practice are:
The effective maintenance of fire extinguishers includes many separate checks on
gauges, moving parts, tubes, valves, and operating mechanisms, amongst others.
The fire extinguishers also need to be thoroughly checked for signs of
corrosion.
Fire extinguisher maintenance tests must be carried out annually, and an
extended service carried out every five years for most types of fire
extinguishers. This includes a full discharge test, where the extinguisher is
operated under test conditions, its performance recorded, any faulty or worn
parts replaced, the extinguisher refilled, and returned to service.
Along with Fire Extinguisher Servicing, SS Testing Ltd can also offer the
following:
-
Supply and replacement of
all extinguishers-
Supply and replacement of
all safety signs-
Supply and replacement of
all extinguisher wall brackets-
24 hour emergency call out

Microwave Emissions Testing |
|
Lack of cleanliness and poor maintenance of the door seals can lead to leakage
levels in excess of the recommended limits. Testing of the unit involves
measurement of the radiation levels using a microwave emissions detection
instrument, to ensure compliance with the 3mW/cm2 limit.
Microwave emission tests are carried out to comply with the BS EN 60335-2-25
requirements for microwave ovens and BS EN 60335-290 1998 Safety of household
electrical appliances.
Microwave oven leakage is serious business. Every year millions of children,
pregnant women, and people of all ages stand too close to an operating microwave
oven, exposing themselves to dangerous levels of body penetrating microwave
radiation. Microwave radiation is known to cause cataracts, birth defects,
cancer and other serious health problems.
Due to the nature of microwave radiation leakage, it is wise at every electrical
inspection interval to carry out Microwave emissions testing, to eradicate any
risk of injury or disease caused by the radiation. |
