Fire safety legislation (Fire Safety Order 2005) requires businesses
to have all portable fire fighting equipment serviced annually by a
competent person. However many so called extinguisher companies are
far from competent. The law requires you to ensure they are
competent.
We supply, commission to BS5306-3 2009 and follow the code of
practice, we install to BS5306-8 2000 using British Standard Kite
marked fire extinguishers. The simplest way to ensure competence is
to insist upon Fire Extinguishing Trades Association (FETA) trained
service personnel. (FETA Is not the only exam body). Ask for a copy
of the engineer’s certificate, if they say no or don’t have one then
take great care!
All our service engineers hold a FETA certificate in the servicing
and maintenance of portable fire-fighting equipment and re-sit the
exam every three years, to show they are competent maintaining a
high standard.
To meet the British Standard all new fire extinguishers must be
commissioned on site, with all the initial findings noted on the
service label. This cannot be done on a sale only basis, from the
internet or mail order, the commissioning engineer should be
competent (e.g. FETA approved).

It is a legal requirement to have extinguishers serviced and
maintained by a competent engineer and suitable fire protection is
an insurance requirement.
Within a UK business 'The Responsible Person' is tasked with not
only ensuring that fire extinguishers are serviced annually but also
that the servicing company are 'Competent'. The easiest way to
demonstrate competence is via third-party certification and in
particular to insist servicing personnel are F.E.T.A. approved.
We include as standard a certificate-of-inspection and a written
report stating the number and type of fire extinguishers along with
any recommendations or advice from the service engineer. |
